My candle isn’t melting the wax all the way to the edge. What’s wrong?
If you’ve let it burn for at least three hours the first time and there’s still 1/4” or so of unmelted wax at the edges, don’t worry. As you burn repeatedly over time, the container will warm up and melt it all down. It should catch up in the end!
The flame looks small. Did I trim it too short?
As long as the melt pool reaches within 1/4” of the edge in 3-4 hours on the first lighting, it’s all good! Your candle was crafted for maximum burn time. When a flame is too large, it melts too much wax and burns off the scent too quickly. If you’re worried the wick might drown, you can always rescue it by spooning out a little bit of melted wax.
My candle is smoking. What’s wrong?
Trim that wick. As long the wick is trimmed to about 1/4” each time you light it, it should not create any smoke or soot. When the flame is too large, it will not only smoke, but it will melt too much wax and burn off the scent too quickly.
What is the scent made of?
The fragrances are a combination of essential oils, resins, and sustainable synthetic aroma ingredients that are as safe as, or safer than, essential oils. I only use scents that are free from toxins such as carcinogens, phthalates, and other hazardous chemicals commonly found in candle fragrances. They have also been extensively tested to make sure they’re safe for candles and smell great when lit.
Why not just use essential oils (EOs)? Aren't they more natural?
Quality: My scents smell and burn better in a candle than candles made with EOs alone. Many EOs will smell fine in an unlit candle but can be unpleasant and even toxic when lit.
Cost: My candles would be way more expensive if I only used EOs.
Safety: Many synthetics are safer than EOs - especially in candles, due to being ignited. Any scent molecule, natural or synthetic, can be harmful - but unlike essential oils, my synthetic ingredients are formulated to meet strict IFRA safety standards.
Sustainability: Synthetics can be more sustainable than EOs that require extensive farming – it can take hundreds of pounds of plant matter to make one pound of essential oil. Many EOs also come from vulnerable species (like sandalwood).
I didn't do a memory burn the first time I lit my candle! How can I fix it?
Use a heat gun or hot hair dryer to melt the wax until the melt pool reaches the edges and the top of the candle is even. If this causes the wick to drown (become too small to stay lit), use a cotton ball or the edge of a paper towel to soak up and remove some wax.
